my dad religiously watched certain shows and one his favorites was M*A*S*H–– a comedy-drama about an Army hospital unit during the Korean War.
At this time, people didn’t have televisions in every room so I began to watch the show whenever it came on. I don’t know if this had any influence on my decision, but by the time I was a sophomore in high school, I knew I was going to join the Army after graduation. A couple of months before I graduated, I did just that.
I never expected the impact this decision would have on my life. Literally overnight, I was placed in situations I had never experienced. I was definitely out of my comfort zone on a daily basis. However, I was learning how to handle the pressures of being emotionally and physically stretched, all the while knowing there was no turning back!
I learned a lot about myself during this time. I learned very quickly that I had two choices: either I was going to make it through or be taken under. This experience has stayed with me through the years and I’m thankful for the lessons I learned from that life adventure. I still enjoy watching M*A*S*H reruns!
